What is Computer Network ?
Connecting two or more computers is called a network. Both cables and cables can be used to connect to a network. Networks are used to share data, information, and resources from one computer to another. This is called Computer Network.
In the Computer network, when computers are connected by phone, a twisted pair cable is used, a coaxial cable or fiber optics cable is used. Wireless connection via Bluetooth, satellite, or radio wave.
The greatest example of networking on the internet where photos, videos, songs, etc. Data are shared. Most computers, servers, and devices are used on the network, with the help of data sharing.
Types of Computer Network
The Computer network is divided into many parts because different networks are of different sizes, country areas, no computers. That is why the network is divided into 4 main categories.
1) LAN (Local Area network)
When two or more computers are connected to a limited area, it is a LAN.
We can connect 1000 computers to this network. Lan is connected for both wired connections and wireless connections.
The cost in this network is low and the speed is used in safety terms. Ethernet is used on this network. It is best in a limited area because its speed is good.
In the office, used for text sharing and printing. What is happening to the scriptures? There is a central server where all files are stored. Any activity can access the file.
This network requires no hardware, just hub, switch, adapter, router or ethernet cable required.
Advantages of LAN
- This is for a limited zone.
- This network can be easily created.
- In this case, the network data transfer speed is high.
- Used at home, office, colleges.
2) MAN(Metropolitan Area Network)
This network connects to two or more local networks. Connecting computers from one city to another. Devices used in this network are routers, switches, and hubs.
This network is larger than LAN and smaller than WAN. In this case, data and data can be processed up to 200 megabytes per second or more. It covers from 10km to 100km. Any major organization using this network.
Advantages of MAN
- It covers more geographic area than lan.
- Ownership is both public and private.
- In this network, there are costs from the lan.
- Maintenance is difficult.
3) WAN (Wide Area Network)
This is the world’s largest network, its largest area. This network is made up of LANs. In this case, data can be shared with computers worldwide and can be connected to any computer in a second.
Wan is an expensive network, many technologies are used in it. The advantage of this network is that it has a lower amount of data and covers more distance.
The greatest example of wan is the internet. Computers in this network are connected between them by system circuits. This restricted network not only builds up, not only in the city but also works to connect worldwide.
Advantages of WAN
- This network is wireless.
- Wan is the largest network network.
- Through this network, information can be transferred worldwide.
4) PAN (Personal Network)
- The Personal Area Network is a network set up within an individual, within 10 meters.
- The Personal Area Network used to connect desktop computers is known as the Personal Area Network.
- Thomas Zimmerman was the first research scientist to bring the idea to the Personal Area Network.
- The Personal Area Network covers an area of 30 meters.
- Your computer devices used to improve your personal area network are laptop, mobile phone, media player and playback channels.
There are two types of Personal Area Networks:
- Wired Personal Network
- Personal Wireless Network
Wireless Personal Area Network: The Wireless Personal Area Network is developed by simply using wireless technology such as WiFi, Bluetooth. It’s a low-level network.
Personal Wireless Network: The Personal Wireless Network is created using USB.
Examples of Personal Area Network:
- Body Area Network:
The Body Area Network is a personal network. For example, a mobile network goes with a person. Suppose a person establishes a network connection and creates a connection with another device to share information.
- Offline Network
The offline network can be created within the home, hence the name home network. The home network is designed to connect devices such as printers, computers, televisions but is not connected to the internet.
- Small Home Office
Used to connect various devices to the Internet and corporate network using a VPN.
Other Network Types
Compass Area Network (CAN)
Larger than LANs, but smaller than large city networks (MAN, described below), these types of networks are often seen at universities, large K-12 school districts, or small businesses. They can be spread across multiple adjacent buildings so users can share resources.
Storage-Area Network (SAN)
As a dedicated high-speed network that connects pools assigned to end devices on multiple servers, these types of networks do not rely on LAN or WAN. Instead, they remove the storage resources away from the network and place them on their network for higher performance.
SANs can be accessed in the same way as a drive attached to a server. Types of storage networks end up including integrated, visible, and integrated SANs.
System-Area Network (known as SAN)
The name is brand new over the past two decades. It is used to define a local network designed to provide high-speed connectivity to server and server applications (clusters), storage networks (called “SANs”), and processor-to-processor applications.
SAN-connected computers operate as a single system at very high speeds.
Enterprise Private Network (EPN)
These types of networks are designed and run by businesses that want to securely connect their various locations to share computer resources.
Virtual Private Network (VPN)
By extending a private network across the Internet, a VPN allows its users to send and receive data as if their devices were connected to a private network – even when they were not. With a point and point connection, users can access the private network remotely.

Types of Wireless Computer Networks
Wireless PAN (WPAN)
In this type of network, the device is interconnected in a small area, for example, Bluetooth is used to connect a mobile phone to a laptop.
Wireless LAN (WLAN)
Wireless LAN is used to connect local resources to the internet. a WLAN is a link between two short-distance devices through a wireless classification method. And also provides a connection to access the internet. Using speed spectrum or dm technology, the user is kept connected even when moving in a spatially fixed area.
Wireless MAN (WMAN)
The wireless metropolitan area network serves to connect many other wireless lanes. Wimax is also a variant of WMAN. Which is expanded by ieee802.16
A wireless wide area network is used to connect large areas such as neighboring towns and cities with each other. These networks are used to connect branches to offices or to connect to the internet access system.
If two networks are to be connected, we will need network devices. Like hub, switch, router, repeater, modem, bridge. We will know in detail about all this nic.
It is a basic network device that works in the physical layer. In this, the devices are physically connected among themselves. Where this device is used, twisted pair only is used in it. There are two types of hubs – active hub and passive hub.
This device also works in the physical layer. But it is more intelligent than the hub, it also filters the data in it. Only data packets were forwarded in the hub, but in the switch, forwarding is done as well as filtering.
The work of this device is to control the route and traffic between two networks. The router is connected to two networks through wired and wireless. The router device works in the network layer.
The work of the bridge works to connect the sub-networks to the network which are in the same network. Like you can connect two computer labs with the help of a bridge.
It is an electronic device that helps in increasing the strength of the signal. This is a device that receives and retransmits a signal. Protects the signal from being lost.
- Network connection card
Network communication cards for devices connecting to computers and networks, after installing this card, they can share hardware, information, or computer devices on the network, are used on local or extensive networks.
With the help of the interface card, the computer needs one thing to connect to another computer and that is the inside communication. If we can not use a wireless network.
